All the way from Texas here comes Annie Smith to share her BERNINA Ambassador program. In this special workshop, we?ll play with relationship between Aurifil threads and BERNINA sewing machines. On the first day, Annie will present the history of Aurifil threads and how the thread is made. We will create stitch samples using little recipes for each of the threads, discuss the proper needle sizes for the corresponding weights, as well as creative uses and applications for the threads. On the second day, we will create a variety of samples using BERNINA accessories and stitches for a variety of embellishments that can be used for quilts and garments alike. Each student will create a resource binder of their work for future reference, with instructions so they can easily be recreated. There will be a bag of Aurifil goodies for each student.

Machine mastery for 2/3 series machines

Bring your Stripology Ruler, the book ?Stripology? by Gudrun Erla, and your lunch, and join Amy O?Donnell for a fun class to make use of these rulers that improve cutting accuracy and save time. For the April meeting, we will use the pattern ?I-Strip?. This pattern, like the others in the book, allows you to choose from two different table toppers or a crib sized quilt. Or, you can make it your own by making a pillow or a larger quilt.

We will start with the very basics of cutting and following the pattern instructions and gradually add techniques each month. Join in as we sew our way through the first in a series of projects from the book Create with Cork Fabric by Jessica Kapitanski (AKA Sallie Tomato). In this class we will make a raw-edge cork pouch with a reverse appliqu? design, and a wristlet strap. We?ll cover tips for getting a professional looking raw-edge on cork and how to install rivets. As a bonus project, we will be turning our cork scraps into fun and lightweight jewelry at the end! Each class will be priced according to project.

Each month I will teach a new technique and help you with the project you are working on. Bring your own projects. I'll provide the coffee! Susan Brubaker Knapp, fiber artist and host of the public TV show ?Quilting Arts TV,? will give a trunk show of her work on Friday, Feb. 7 at 6 p.m. at Bernina World of Sewing. Susan has just moved back to Chapel Hill (she lived here in the 1980s as a graduate student at UNC-CH). She teaches nationally and internationally, and her work has been widely exhibited. She makes both traditional and art quilts, and is passionate about helping her students discover the artist within. In her art quilts, Susan uses two primary techniques ? wholecloth painting and fusible appliqu? ? and often heavily thread sketches her work to achieve more detail before quilting. Create a fabulous coiled basket made of clothesline rope that has been corded with fabric strips. Use scraps or a graduated roll of strips. Batiks work especially well since they are tightly woven and don't fray easily. Baskets can be of any size or shape, and you can even produce coasters or hot mats from the leftover pieces of rope.

Use rulers to create beautiful quilting easily on either your domestic or longarm machine.
